I AM HAPPY

I Am Happy is a series of work originated from within me that is projecting outward. It all started from the literal stack of diaries I've filled up over time. I removed the inside, leaving the cubic exterior intact. My early cubes were made from materials like fabric, knitted mohair, feather, glass, stone and steel. Some works consisted of only the cube itself, some had sounds within and some contained written words from my diary. I selected a glass cube to represent myself as a human who is vulnerable, feeble, delicate and fragile. On the cube surface, I wrote a phrase which reads 'I am happy' in Korean because what I found from my diary is a person who constantly searches to be happy.

I started with one small cube which represents me, but later, I made another cube which represents the other person. I multiplied those cubes which means I made a society consisting of glass cubes. The small glass cube was expanded to a glass room in a museum that a person can physically walk into. Later, I took the glass cube and traveled to the outside of museum and even outside where I was from.

Carrying it throughout all of journey from Seoul to Beijing and to New York, the cube and my diary have kept me going. It is myself as well as a shadow which is mine but sometimes doesn't look like me.
